Simple Winter Decorating

If you have been following me for a while, you know that I love to simplify anything and everything I do. In no way am I saying that my life is perfectly simple and carefree, but I am saying that it’s my mission to strive to be more mindful and intentional in whatever I am doing and hopefully what I share here will help encourage you to do the same.

I used to be notorious for over complicating things and it has taken years of practice and fine tuning to get me to a place where I can really appreciate the simple things in life and not be overly stressed about the tiny things that don’t really matter in the bigger picture. I still have a lot of refining to do and by “I”, I mean the Lord! (smile) I have become an expert at dusting myself off and continuing to move forward despite daily set backs. I have a feeling that you know what I am talking about. Thankfully, the Lord is not a quitter and will complete the work He has begun in us! Amen! (smile)

As a military family, we moved a lot and every time we moved, we would do what most people do before they move. We purged items that no longer were serving us. There are some things that I wish we would have kept. Like my husband’s old trumpet from when he was a boy. It would have gone nicely with our vintage farmhouse style, but some man in upstate NY gets to enjoy it now. (sigh) I guess there’s a lesson there, somewhere. When purging, really consider future scenarios that you may be able to use an item or two. My hubby regrets selling our wheel barrow and some jack stands, but you live and learn, right?!

Speaking of learning, I know first hand, how easy it can be to get carried away during the holidays! I used to have bins full of “stuff” and although my collection of decor probably looked small in comparison to some of my fellow bloggers, it still managed to start spilling over around the house. That is when our family decided to reflect on why we do what we do. It was at that time, we really made the transition to a more simple way of life and we have just continued to grow and learn more efficient ways of doing things over the years, especially around the hollow.

These days when I decorate our farmhouse or log cabin, I try my best to use things that we already have or try to find in nature, before I go rushing out to purchase something new at the store. I love decorating with fresh cut evergreens! They look so pretty paired up with pinecones and wild turkey feathers. I did find these evergreen wreaths at our local Tractor Supply for less than $8, so I grabbed two, removed the red velvet bows and added what you see here. I love the way they turned out! So simple, yet so pretty!

Snow is one of my favorite natural decorations to see around the hollow. (smile) It really dresses up the farm. Doesn’t it?! I always say that snow makes everything magical! Don’t you think?
